Draco Lizard

Draco lizard which are also known as the flying lizard or flying dragon are a remarkable reptile capable of gliding through the air using its wing-like flaps of skin, supported by their elongated ribs. These reptiles are typically found in Southeast Asia and are known for their vibrant colors and ability to control their descent, making them unique among reptiles.

  • Family: Agamidae
  • Habitat: Primarily arboreal, inhabiting tropical rainforests, and rarely found on the forest floor.
  • Diet: Insectivorus, mainly feeding on ants and termites.
  • Gliding Distance: Capable of gliding distances up to 60 meters (200 feet) while losing only about 10 meters (33 feet) in height.
  • Takeoff and Landing: They jump headfirst, orienting their bodies parallel to the ground, and land forefeet-first.
  • Diet: Insectivorous, mainly feeding on ants and termites.
  • Gliding Distance: Capable of gliding distances up to 60 meters (200 feet) while losing only about 10 meters (33 feet) in height.
  • Coloration: The color of the patagium often mimics local foliage, providing camouflage against predators
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Females are generally larger than males, and they are the only ones that descend to the ground to lay eggs.
  • Egg Laying: Females lay 2-5 eggs in a nest hole they create in the soil, guarding them for about 24 hours before leaving.
  • Subfamily: Draconinae, closely related to the genera Japalura and Ptyctolaemus.
  • Species Count: There are 41 recognized species of Draco lizards, including Draco volans (common flying dragon) and Draco dussumieri (Indian flying lizard).
  • Predator Evasion: Gliding is primarily used to escape predators and navigate through their forest habitat.
