"DOOMSDAY FISH"

THE OARFISH

DOOMSDAY FISH

Oarfish, or "Doomsday Fish," these are fascinating creatures that capture the imagination due to their size, rarity, and the myths surrounding them. These are not well-studied due to their deep-sea habitat, making it difficult to assess their population and behavior.  OarFish primarily found in deep ocean waters, usually at depths of 200 to 1,000 feet. Their coloration is typically silvery with a reflective quality, which make them to appear ghostly in the water. They have a distinctive dorsal fin that runs along their entire length & have a long, ribbon-like body

These deep-sea creatures are known for their elongated bodies, which can reach lengths of up to 55 feet. These fish are believed to rise to the surface when they are sick or dying, which is often when they are spotted by humans. When they are spotted near the shorelines , signals impending natural disasters particularly earthquakes , leading to their ominous nickname "Doomsday Fish".

In July 2023, divers in Taiwan encountered a 6.5-foot oarfish, which was filmed and shared widely, reigniting interest in these creatures.Last time they were sighted as of AUGUST 2024 .They are usually found dead ,BUT in JAN 2019 two OARFISH found alive in nets of fisherman on Japnese Island of Okinawa. Such sightings are very rare and most of the oarfish that reach shore are found dead.

The term "Doomsday Fish" stems from folklore that suggests oarfish appear before significant seismic events, such as earthquakes. BUT This belief is not scientifically supported; experts like ichthyologist Hiroyuki Motomura state that there is no evidence linking oarfish sightings to earthquakes.
